The Amboni Caves are a series of limestone caves formed over 150 million years ago. Located about 8 km north of Tanga town, they are the largest in East Africa. The main cave, known as the "Kisima" cave, features impressive calcite formations, underground streams, and a cathedral-like chamber with remarkable acoustics. Local guides share stories of the caves' use as a refuge during the Maji Maji rebellion and their spiritual significance to the surrounding communities.
Visitors can explore several chambers, each with unique formations – including "the bride and groom" pillars, "the altar", and "the snake" – named by guides for their shapes. The caves are also home to a large colony of Egyptian fruit bats and several species of insects adapted to darkness.
Morning: Departure & Arrival at the Caves
8:30 AM – Pickup from your hotel in Tanga or meeting point. Drive north along the coastal road (approx. 20 minutes) to the Amboni Caves site. Upon arrival, meet your local guide who will provide a brief introduction to the history and geology of the caves. You'll be given helmets with headlamps (if required) and briefed on safety inside the caves.
Late Morning: Guided Cave Tour
Enter the main cave system. The first chamber reveals massive stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites rising from the floor. Your guide will point out formations resembling human figures, animals, and objects – each with a story from local folklore. You'll pass through narrow passages into the "Cathedral Chamber", noted for its excellent acoustics and used for occasional ceremonies. Learn about the caves' role as a hiding place during the Maji Maji uprising against German colonizers. Keep an eye out for the resident fruit bats hanging in the darker recesses. The tour lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, covering several interconnected chambers.
Lunch: Picnic or Local Restaurant
After emerging from the caves, enjoy a packed lunch amidst the lush surroundings or opt for a transfer to a nearby local restaurant in Tanga for Swahili cuisine (own expense).
Afternoon: Optional Visit to Tongoni Ruins
Drive south to Tongoni (about 30 minutes) to explore the 15th-century Shirazi ruins, including a mosque and dozens of tombs, some with pillar decorations. Your guide explains the history of the Swahili coast and the significance of this archaeological site. Afterwards, you may have time for a short walk on the nearby beach before returning to Tanga.
