Lake Chala (also known as Lake Chala) is a 4km wide crater lake on the eastern slope of Mount Kilimanjaro, nestled between Tanzania and Kenya. Its deep blue-green waters are fed by underground springs from Kilimanjaro's melting glaciers, creating a sacred and mystical atmosphere. The lake is over 100m deep and offers a unique microclimate, often with mist rising at dawn.
Visitors can hike down to the shore, canoe on the calm waters, or trek the rim for sweeping views of the surrounding savannah and the mighty Kilimanjaro. It's a paradise for photographers, birdwatchers, and anyone seeking tranquility away from crowds.
Departure: 8:00 AM from Moshi / 8:30 AM from Taveta. Drive to Lake Chala (1.5h). Arrive and descend to the lake shore (short hike). Enjoy canoeing on the tranquil waters for about 1 hour. Afterwards, relax on the shore, swim (optional), and birdwatch. Picnic lunch with stunning lake views. Hike back up and return to your hotel by early afternoon.
Day Trip: Early departure (7:00 AM) to maximize the day. After arrival, start with a guided nature walk along the crater rim (2-3 hours) offering panoramic views into Kenya and the plains below. Descend to the lake for a long canoeing session, exploring hidden coves. Enjoy a hearty BBQ lunch prepared by our team on the lakeshore. Afternoon free for swimming, photography, or simply relaxing. Return to Moshi/Taveta by late afternoon (5:00 PM).
Combine your Lake Chala adventure with a visit to a traditional Chagga coffee plantation on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. Morning: coffee tour and tasting. Lunch at a local café. Afternoon: drive to Lake Chala for canoeing and relaxation. Return in the evening. Perfect for those wanting cultural and natural immersion.
Canoeing: Paddle across the crystal-clear lake, often alone with nature. Life jackets and experienced guides provided.
Hiking: Choose between the steep descent to the shore or a longer rim trek (3-4 hours) with breathtaking vistas.
Swimming: The lake is safe for swimming (no crocodiles or hippos) and the water is clean and refreshing.
Birdwatching: Over 100 species including African fish eagle, palm-nut vulture, malachite kingfisher, and many more.
Photography: The interplay of light on the crater walls and the lake's colors offers endless opportunities.

The only lake of its kind fed by Kilimanjaro's glaciers – an ever-changing palette of blues and greens.
Canoeing, hiking, swimming – all in one spectacular location. Perfect for active travelers.
Over 100 bird species including rare migratory birds and the majestic fish eagle.
On clear days, the backdrop of Africa's highest peak makes the scenery unforgettable.
Lake Chala is unique because of its direct connection to Kilimanjaro's aquifer, resulting in exceptionally clear water that changes color with the season. Unlike Ngorongoro Crater, it's a smaller, more intimate setting ideal for relaxation and water activities. It's less commercialized, offering a raw, natural experience.
The lake is home to a variety of birdlife: African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, and weavers. You might spot vervet monkeys and small antelope along the rim. The lake itself has no large aquatic animals, making swimming safe. Occasionally, you may see butterflies and reptiles.
Dry season (June-October, January-February): Best weather for hiking and clear views. The lake is especially vibrant. Rainy season (March-May, November): Lush green surroundings, fewer visitors, but trails can be slippery. Birding is excellent. The lake is accessible year-round.
Absolutely! Children love canoeing and swimming. The hike down is short and manageable for older kids. Life jackets are provided. The site is safe and there's plenty of space for picnics. We recommend the half-day trip for families with young children.
