Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park (20,226 km²) and offers a uniquely remote wilderness experience with significantly fewer visitors than northern circuit parks. It boasts one of East Africa's highest lion densities and exceptional predator viewing. The landscape is dramatically different - characterized by ancient baobab forests, rolling hills, and the Great Ruaha River. This combination of abundant wildlife, breathtaking scenery, and exclusivity makes Ruaha a truly special destination for discerning safari-goers seeking an authentic African wilderness.
Ruaha is accessed via scheduled light aircraft flights from Dar es Salaam (2 hours), Arusha (2.5 hours), or Zanzibar (2 hours). These flights land at one of several airstrips within the park, where your guide will meet you. Road access is possible but involves long drives (8-10 hours from Dar es Salaam) on rough roads, so flying is strongly recommended. We include all internal flights in our safari packages for convenience and to maximize your time on safari. The aerial views of the Tanzanian landscape are an additional bonus!
Ruaha offers excellent wildlife viewing year-round, but different seasons provide unique experiences: Dry Season (June-October): Best for predator action as animals congregate around remaining water sources. Vegetation is sparse, making wildlife easier to spot. Green Season (November-May): Lush landscapes, excellent birdwatching (migrant species present), fewer visitors, and lower rates. January-March is particularly good for calving season and predator-prey interactions. April-May sees the park at its greenest with dramatic skies.
Ruaha is renowned for its predators: lions (high density), leopards, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas. The park hosts over 10% of Africa's lion population. Large herds of elephants and buffalo are common. You'll see various antelope including greater kudu (the park's emblem), sable and roan antelope, impala, and Grant's gazelle. The Great Ruaha River supports hippos and crocodiles. Birdlife is exceptional with 570+ species including endemics like the Ruaha red-billed hornbill. Rare sightings may include African wild dogs.
Ruaha offers exclusive, high-quality accommodation due to its remote nature. Options include: Luxury Tented Camps: Spacious canvas tents with en-suite bathrooms, comfortable beds, and private verandas overlooking wilderness. Lodges: Stone-and-thatch structures blending with the environment, offering swimming pools and panoramic views. Bush Camps: More rustic, intimate experiences for true wilderness lovers. All accommodations we use are carefully selected for their location, quality, service, and commitment to sustainable tourism. Most have electricity (solar-powered), hot water, and excellent cuisine.
