Choose between the high-altitude Shira Plateau (3,800m) with stunning views or the rainforest Mandara Hut hike with wildlife spotting opportunities.
Our guides are certified Kilimanjaro professionals with extensive mountain experience. They provide safety, knowledge, and local insights throughout your hike.
Everything included: transfers, permits, guide services, picnic lunch, water, and park fees. No hidden costs or last-minute expenses.
Shira Plateau offers higher altitude (3,800m), spectacular panoramic views of Kibo Peak, and alpine landscapes. It's more challenging with longer hiking time but rewards with incredible photo opportunities. Mandara Hut provides a gentler hike through beautiful rainforest with wildlife spotting chances (monkeys, birds) and visits a traditional mountain hut. Choose Shira for views and altitude experience; choose Mandara for rainforest and wildlife. Most visitors prefer Shira Plateau for its dramatic scenery.
Both hikes require moderate fitness levels. You should be comfortable walking 5-6 hours with elevation gain. The Shira Plateau hike involves approximately 1,700m altitude gain over 5-6 hours; Mandara Hut involves 900m over 4-5 hours. We recommend some regular walking or light hiking preparation if you're not physically active. The pace is always steady ("pole pole" - slowly slowly) with regular breaks. People aged 12-70 with average fitness have successfully completed both hikes.
Day trips operate year-round, but conditions vary: Dry Seasons (June-October & December-March): Best conditions with clear views, cooler temperatures. Shoulder Seasons (November & April-May): Possible rain but fewer visitors, lush green landscapes. The Shira Plateau route can be affected by rain more than Mandara during wet seasons. Morning starts are generally clear even in rainy seasons. We provide rain gear if needed. For guaranteed clear views, choose dry season months.
Children: Minimum age is 12 years for Shira Plateau, 10 years for Mandara Hut. Children should be accompanied by parents/guardians and have some hiking experience. Seniors: We've guided many active seniors in their 60s and 70s. A medical consultation is recommended for those over 65 or with pre-existing conditions. The Mandara Hut route is generally more suitable for families with children and older participants due to gentler gradients and lower altitude.
We monitor weather conditions closely. In case of severe weather forecast, we may: 1) Proceed with appropriate gear (we provide rain jackets/pants), 2) Delay start time if weather is expected to clear, 3) Offer alternative route (Shira to Mandara or vice versa), 4) Reschedule to another day at no extra cost if possible, 5) Offer full refund if cancellation is necessary. Safety is our priority - our guides are trained in mountain weather assessment.
Absolutely! Popular combinations include: Day Hike + Cultural Tour (Maasai village visit on same or following day), Day Hike + Safari (hike one day, safari the next), Day Hike + Relaxation (hike followed by spa visit). Many visitors combine Kilimanjaro day trip with 2-3 day safari to Ngorongoro or Serengeti. We can arrange all logistics including transfers and accommodation. The day hike fits perfectly into most Tanzania itineraries.
